Long Overdue update
So I clearly have months of catching up here to do. Firstly, the Aerogardens are doing ok. Obviously I had to replant after the pepper debacle. Unfortunately the pods I had left were duds and I had to order more. I just restarted them about two weeks ago. So far, so good. I have some new little seedlings and they seem healthy. I also had to buy some new gardens. Inside my oldest Aerogarden Sprout the aerator simply stopped working. Since the sprout aerators are located in the base of the machine they aren’t as easy to replace. Luckily the Memorial Day sale was around the corner and I decided to upgrade to a new Harvest machine instead.
Then the second Sprout decided it was done, blew a circuit, and tried to take out all of the rest with it. Luckily I’m a smart cookie and everyone is on a surge protector. But that also meant I got to buy another new machine. I liked my new Harvest machine and when they’re on sale they’re relatively inexpensive. So I bought another one.
Both are now growing a couple of different things. One I’m trying to dedicate to herbs. It has basil and chives currently. I tried planting more cilantro but I clearly have no luck with that in the machines. I did get it to grow pretty well outside after taking my moms advice about making sure it was well drained. Then monsoon season hit Florida and it drowned. Since the temperatures have finally evened back out again, thank goodness, I may give it another go. The other machine has tomatoes and lettuce. I had a very good head of lettuce going at one point. But it started bolting, so I tossed it and started again.
The downfall of lettuce is that you generally need something like three plants for every one grown adult to really have enough to make a full salad. The only way to get that is to dedicate a whole machine to it and I don’t necessarily want to waste a whole machine that way. Maybe if the herbs go south I’ll consider it.
The strawberries need to be restarted. I was having an algae problem and wasn’t sure how to fix it. Then they started dying. I bought some new coco grow but I bought it on Amazon instead of the Aerogarden website. They were out at the time and I was desperate. I tried to clean out the garden and add new grow and I think it would have worked. One of the plants actually restarted. I think it was too late for the others. About two weeks after I cleaned them out I noticed bugs crawling around the grow. After searching I found that the coco grow from Amazon had these little white bugs in it. Luckily it didn’t seem to transfer to the other plants nearby. I took the bag outside as well just in case. I will definitely be buying them from Aerogarden next time. Unfortunately they always seem to be out of stock.
I hope the grow no longer has the bugs because I need to start again and Aerogarden still appears to be out it. I’m hoping putting the grow outside helped with the bug problem. I also ordered new crowns to plant from the same website I got them at last time. They worked so well and the berries were delicious when I got them really going. Next post I’ll update on the outside garden because, yay, we finally did something with it!
